This is why I don’t gamble in Vegas… or anywhere else if I can avoid it. I wonder if because I ran it once before that I’m ineligible for the lottery. But that was, gulp, 16 years ago. So I’m 1 for 16. Yowza.

On this Oscar Sunday, I made the trek up the 405 to Bakersfield, California. The race festival was at the Kern County Museum, a Wild West style Oil Boomtown, complete with oil derricks, western storefronts, and inexplicably a neon sign graveyard. Apparently there were 1400 participants across the various distances — a 6K, 10K, half […]
Soooo… they didn’t deliver on the cannon firing at the start line. They used a pre-recorded soundtrack, a cheap sound effect wav file that I swear was made using MIDI software in 1997. In prior years they had an actual cannon firing… and indeed I’ve been at races with a cannon. Maybe there was a […]
Would that I were faster… and lived closer to this franchisee Now THIS is a prize for winning a race…
Once more into the lottery I go… Thanks to a class action lawsuit a few years back, it’s now “free” to enter the lottery… but if you “win” the registration fee for NYC this year is $295. Two hundred ninety five dollars! And yet we all would gladly pay it. Viva Capitalism!
Forget the Alamo. This race wasn’t my finest 4 hours and is perhaps best relegated to the Magic 8 Ball style “memory hazy… try again later.” Today was the 186th anniversary of the fall of the Alamo. This year the event takes on greater significance with parallels made to the valiant Ukrainian stand against the […]
Last week I had trouble letting go of little annoyances. One of the things I didn’t mention was the Presidents Day Weekend Pro-Trump 2024 rally that made me sick to my stomach. I thought I could just ignore it, chalk it up to a locality far too close to Mar A Lago to matter to […]
Huh. So here’s a funny story. Not a “ha ha” funny story. More of a “well, that’s strange” funny story. This weekend I’m due to run the Ventura Marathon. I signed up for it awhile back because it was convenient and I checked my spreadsheet and I hadn’t ever run it before. But here’s the […]
Ya know, I wish there was a song that could encapsulate the lessons I *should* have learned from this marathon. A showstopper thing, one that advises and encourages and inspires, speaking truth to power. And it should also incorporate the word “fractals.” I was in a snit at the start line for the Fort Lauderdale […]
Ah, yes… a few stray shots from the last few races, courtesy of the official race photographers. As always, I’m too cheap to buy them… if I bought every race I ran, I mean, C’mon. That’s just ridiculous, ya know? So instead here are the watermarked ones I thought looked passably okay… CLEARWATER MARATHON – […]
