{"id":17247,"date":"2017-09-30T03:11:38","date_gmt":"2017-09-30T07:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.runkevinrun.com\/?p=17247"},"modified":"2017-09-30T03:11:38","modified_gmt":"2017-09-30T07:11:38","slug":"september-29-2017-a-walking-solo-tour-in-brussels-and-minieurope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/runkevinrun.com\/?p=17247","title":{"rendered":"September 29, 2017 &#8211; A Walking Solo Tour In Brussels&#8230; and MiniEurope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Being in Brussels is like I&#8217;m inside The Truman Show.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s not the Kevin Show.\u00a0 It&#8217;s as if there&#8217;s been a sequel &#8212; The Truman Show Goes To Europe &#8212; and I am a poorly screened extra who has wandered onto the backlot fantasy world of a European town.\u00a0 It all has this surreal, facade-y feel.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know what people do here. I mean, they EU here, sure.\u00a0 And there&#8217;s stuff happening to be sure.\u00a0 But it seems like the majority of people seem to hang out at cafes or in the numerous pubs that dot the streets&#8230; and at all hours of the day.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not raucous or rambunctious.\u00a0 It&#8217;s actually kinda like New Orleans with 75% less debauch.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all very civilized and charming and yet oddly unworldly&#8230; is it Stepfordian?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure.\u00a0 It&#8217;s kinda magical I guess&#8230; and I haven&#8217;t even been to Bruges yet.\u00a0 You know Bruges:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/diZ3JVmqoic\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This morning I made a trek out to Atomium, the relic symbolic landmark of the World&#8217;s Fair Expo 58.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really quite a thing.\u00a0\u00a0 Much like the Eiffel Tower in France, once the fair was over the locals wanted to make the temporary thing a permanent part of the cityscape.\u00a0 And good thing too &#8212; it was swarming with tourists when I was there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.runkevinrun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_7023.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone outside.\u00a0 Maybe I&#8217;ll regret that&#8230; but I don&#8217;t think so.\u00a0 I&#8217;m seeing plenty of Brussels on foot and I&#8217;ll see even more on Sunday at the Marathon.<\/p>\n<p><a theme park of miniature European Union landmarks that I thought I&#8217;d check out.\u00a0 The admission there was a steep 15,30 Euros but, well, I skipped the Atomium so&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a &#8220;what the hell is happening with those miniature people in this scene?&#8221;\u00a0 I appreciate a good injoke as much as anyone; a few easter eggs here and there is good for repeat viewings and to keep folks engaged.\u00a0 Fine, fine.\u00a0 But every so often even I think, &#8220;wait&#8230; what?\u00a0 What&#8217;s up with that?&#8221;\u00a0 Case in point:<\/p>\n<p><a bib for Sunday&#8217;s run.\u00a0 I&#8217;m still fighting this annoying cold\/sinus infection and didn&#8217;t have much of an appetite.\u00a0 My mouth tastes of medicine, my stomach roils with too many drugs and not enough sustenance.\u00a0 I cancelled my evening&#8217;s reservation at a Belgian place to do a tasting menu of local cuisines and rescheduled it for Monday, my last night in town, as a blow out.\u00a0 I did however partake of one of the top Belgian foods &#8211; fries with special sauces.\u00a0 I went with the chip man&#8217;s recommendation of sorta-spicy &#8220;<span class=\"st\">andalouse,&#8221; scared off of the super spicy &#8220;samurai&#8221; dipping sauce.\u00a0 Some day that samurai and I are gonna square off.\u00a0 Some day.\u00a0 Maybe in
