<\/a><\/p>\nI should\u2019ve known the Airport wouldn\u2019t be open for an hour or two; the moose outside should\u2019ve told me, as the old WallyWorld joke goes.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s gonna be one of those days, and thus the perfect end to this trip.<\/p>\n My blog posts are typically, and dare I say uniformly, riddled with typos, prone to grammatical errors, subjective and superficial, all the while lacking the coherence and grace of a proofread and analytical rewrite. But they have in them the raw, visceral, Malcolm Gladwell \u201cblink\u201d style of-the-moment-ness that I hope makes up for at least a little bit of the wayward errors.<\/p>\n I\u2019m constantly trying to feed the proverbial beast, setting a personal goal of a new post every day. Some days are nothingburgers and some might be a three course meal. Regardless of the day, I sometimes gloss over bits or cut things as I write using a gut-reaction, on-the-fly, self-censoring editing process. It doesn\u2019t always work out very well but … sigh…<\/p>\n There\u2019s been more reflection and analysis in my past few posts than I normally do if only because so much has gone wrong. As I think back on this trip, it was death by a thousand cuts, a broken camel\u2019s back from too much straw, a crossed rubicon of a red line. Those cliches are trite but they have endured because there are kernels of truth to them. I could, as often the case in my life, roll with any number of things until I hit my breaking point. And then I\u2019m just done. This trip broke me the last few days, such that those little things throughout the tour have grown in significance and in disappointment.<\/p>\n And yet I\u2019m trying to see the brighter side. I\u2019m trying to be positive. I\u2019m trying.<\/p>\n The meandering point is that there are any number of cut scenes, alternate takes, abandoned ideas and concept art in any given blog post … and it\u2019s especially true on one of these multiday tour packages. I thought as I sit here for the next 13 or 14 hours flying home it might be a good time to post some of the lost or missing or extended beats. Think of this as the Hanna Solo Bonus Feature Special Edition.<\/p>\n I considered titling this section \u201cHan Shot First!\u201d<\/p>\n Hopefully there will be some fun in this look back… and that may lead to a restoration of balance in my memory of the tour.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n We begin with a few selections from Israel.\u00a0 Some of these may even have made it into the blog posts or onto social media\u2026 though I don\u2019t think so.\u00a0 I\u2019m at 36,000 feet somewhere over the Atlantic and I\u2019m too cheap to pay for the Turkish Airlines wifi\u2026 though if ever there were a flight-long charge to pay, it\u2019s probably this one.<\/p>\n This is at the beach in Tel Aviv.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s supposed to be a jew’s harp.\u00a0 I actually think the term jew’s harp might be incredibly racist.\u00a0 I might be incredibly racist just for typing the phrase jew’s harp.\u00a0 Oh, god.\u00a0 I typed \u201cjew’s harp\u201d again.\u00a0 And again just there!\u00a0 Argh!<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n This may have appeared on the blog in a slightly different angle.\u00a0 But I have to say, as a foreigner in a foreign land who struggles speaking his native tongue, I was relieved to be told there was an English menu.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n This is one of those storefronts that feels like it should be in the background of Springfield, USA, on the Simpsons.\u00a0 ICU \u2013 Put Success On Your Face?\u00a0 A bit on the nose don\u2019t you think.\u00a0 HEY YO!<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n For some reason I was obsessed with the street name \u201cEinstein.\u201d\u00a0 I guess because I wished there were IQ tests to determine if you were worthy of living on Smartypants Lane.\u00a0 And I secretly hoped that\u2019s what everybody who DIDN\u2019T live on Einstein Rd called it.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n I always find it funny to see gift shops\/kiosks at religious sites.\u00a0 It always feels unintentionally ironic and hypocritical to me to have them there.\u00a0 Albeit I think vows of poverty amidst cathedrals and jewel encrusted alters is a bit gauche.\u00a0 What do I know?\u00a0 I\u2019ve been a recovering catholic for decades now.<\/p>\n I don\u2019t have a photo to illustrate this, but did you know there are lots of Tunisian vineyards?\u00a0 They\u2019re mostly located in Cap Bon, the Italian christened peninsula in the northeastern corner of the country.\u00a0 Considering Tunisia, for lack of a better definition, is a Muslim country and alcohol is forbidden by the Quoran, this may seem a little puzzling.\u00a0 But there\u2019s a long tradition of wine in this area, and you can thank the Phoenecians for that.\u00a0 And the ensuing civilizations here as well.\u00a0 There\u2019s a small amount of export but the majority of the wine, at least according to my guide, goes to the hotels and tourism industry for visitors\u2026 although there are SOME Muslims who do imbibe.\u00a0 Whether alcohol is forbidden or discouraged is claimed to be up for debate\/interpretation\u2026 albeit as with any such<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n This is outside the Dead Sea ticket booth we went to.\u00a0 There\u2019s something of a giggling 6th<\/sup> grader in me that laughs at the reference to \u201cprivate things\u201d at a place I have to get naked at in order to go in and out of the salt water.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Here\u2019s an example of the cohabitation \u201cbalance\u201d the guides promoted, the reason that it\u2019s much better than the mass media would have you believe.\u00a0 Israeli plates are in yellow and Palenstinan plates are in green.\u00a0 So, ya know, if you\u2019re the wrong color on the wrong road you\u2019re in trouble.\u00a0 It\u2019s that kind of \u201cenlightenment\u201d that sounds an awful lot like \u201ccoloreds only\u201d vs \u201cwhites only.\u201d\u00a0 It creeps me out to no end.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Jerusalem Marathon in March \u2013 pass.\u00a0 It\u2019s actually only a few days from now and at one point I *had* considered extending my trip to go back out of Israel.\u00a0 Given my current mindset and the fact that post-one-step fall at Hotel Sidi Driss I\u2019m having some pained breathing (suspected bruised ribs and hip), it\u2019s probably for the best that I\u2019m heading home, no passing Jerusalem, not collecting 200 shekels.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n I always find the word choice in signs amusing, be it a native speaker\u2019s sign or a translaton for foreigners.\u00a0 This \u201cstick to the right\u201d sign felt like some weird hybrid as it has a colloquial vibe \u2026 but also the wrong kind of colloquial vibe if that makes sense.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n God, how I wish this sign worked.\u00a0 Everywhere I went, Israel, Turkey in the airport, on the plane from Turkey, and Tunisia itself there was just so much smoking.\u00a0 No wonder my sinus infection kept getting worse throughout the trip \u2013 I kept sucking down lungfuls of this crap despite the oacks being emblazoned in bold Arial font \u201cSMOKING KILLS.\u201d<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n This was in Nazareth, apparently a hotbed HQ for Microsoft.\u00a0 And I found it a little tacky that the Merry Christmas sign was still up in late February.\u00a0 C\u2019mon, MS \u2013 set a reminder on your calendar app!<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n While waiting to start the Tel Aviv Marathon, this guy was in front of me.\u00a0 The only thing I could think about in the opening kilometer was, \u201cIs it just me or it that some weird spacing on Bu charest?\u201d<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n And now onto Tunisia…<\/p>\n After picking up my bib for Carthage I realized I dropped my safety pins.\u00a0 I texted the race organizers to ask if they\u2019d have spare ones in the morning.\u00a0 They said they had no idea what a safety pin was.\u00a0 I snet back this photo and said maybe they just call them pins here?\u00a0 Never got an answer on that but they DID have spare whatever these things are called at the starting line.<\/p>\n And I played with the color on my finisher photo as months ago I did a similar one with Steve and me rockin\u2019 our Solo shirts that our mom bought us for Christmas.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n This I KNOW I posted to social media \u2013 but when it\u2019s 10.50 for a can at a kiosk and 6.50 in the vending machine, well, gosh, you buy from the vending machine whether you\u2019re thirsty or not.\u00a0 That\u2019s just good fiscal responsibility to be saving that kind of money.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n When Ons recommended a restaurant to me in Sidi Bousaid, they had this sticker on their counter.\u00a0 I\u2019m used to the Phantom Gourmet, the anonymous diner I think based in the Northeast who would dine at local places and write reviews.\u00a0 Apparently in Tunis, some joker does it.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n While killing time at the Carthage Airport before my flight to Djerba, I was craving a Coke Zero.\u00a0 But not even the siren\u2019s call of that caffeinated nectar of the gods could get me to pay these prices.\u00a0 A can of coke was more than a quiche, more than a chocolate cake.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n During my initial walkabout at Djerba, I took some shots of area establishments ant probably posted them without much comment \u2013 sometimes I just let the image speak for itself and sometimes I try and put in a supposedly pithy comment.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a failed attempt at one or two below:<\/p>\n In this McDonald\u2019s knock-off emblem I had hoped to find the Big Mick from Coming to America <\/em>(1998) fame.<\/p>\n I don\u2019t know if Lloyd\u2019s of London has a branch here or if some entrepreneurial soul saw an opening\u2026<\/p>\n I\u2019m not sure exactly what he does, but I kinda wanted to sign a contract with him just so I could say I was represented by some schmuck.<\/p>\n This was at a pop-up street fair carnival we passed in a city.\u00a0 Of all the kings I can think of (Elvis, Kong, Yul Brynner, Ralph, etc), I don\u2019t recognize this one.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n When we went through Tataouine I opted for a hitchhiker\u2019s pose at the outskirts.\u00a0 But I also loved this sign showcasing the Arabic and French influences.<\/p>\n Speaking of the French influence, ever since the colonial period (1881 until independence in 1956), Tunisia has adopted a number of French customs and traditions.\u00a0 So while most Muslim dominated countries have their holy day Friday and Saturday as their \u201cweekend,\u201d Tunisia opted to have a Friday mid-day holiday for the most important prayer service but keep their weekend as Saturday and Sunday.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure how to take that honestly. The colonial influence remains strong.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n This was at a roadside caf\u00e9 we stopped at.\u00a0 It\u2019s important NOT to confuse these two doors.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Nader (I\u2019m just going to spell it that way now as that\u2019s how the tour company referred to him) and Mohammed at the Ksar Hedada, site of the famed balcony scene from The Phantom Menace.\u00a0 They were chuffed about the previous tour pair leaving behind the \u201cblack mask\u201d and \u201cwhite mask\u201d though they didn\u2019t know who they were.\u00a0 I\u2019d ask them to take a photo and sometimes they\u2019d insist on wearing the masks too to get into the spirit of things\u2026 whether it was to make me feel less sad about traveling alone (ugh\u2026 enough!) or it was they just enjoyed wearing a mask now and again (who doesn\u2019t!) I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n I do know that at the Lars Homestead exterior, Mohammed had put on his Darth Vader mask upside down.\u00a0 I thought about NOT saying anything as it was a sort of perfect example of their unfamiliarity with Star Wars but I was worried he was having trouble seeing\u2026 which he was\u2026 because the mask was upside down.<\/p>\n At some stage we talked about the Arab Spring Revolution in 2011.\u00a0 Nader told me nothing has changed after the revolution.\u00a0 Those countries Tunisia had had ties with in the past \u2013 most especially Italy \u2013 are in similar financial trouble.\u00a0 The Tunisians he says neither like nor dislike Trump \u2013 they think of him as a non-entity as he doesn\u2019t seem to \u201ctweet\u201d or care about Tunisia one way or another.\u00a0 Nader was of the opinion even the Prime Minister was ambivalent about Trump because he\u2019s more concerned about what people will actually do for the country.\u00a0 By the same token, they really liked Clinton \u2013 Bill, not Hillary.<\/p>\n Nader\u2019s wife studied telecom and technology at University but there are no jobs.\u00a0 Jobs remain a huge problem. I asked if there would be another revolution\/uprising then to try and change matters once more.\u00a0 \u201cWhy bother?\u201d Nader said.\u00a0 \u201cIt didn\u2019t work last time.\u00a0 They tried and it did nothing.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s a resigned sadness to his statement.\u00a0 But, he says, \u201csince 2011 Tunisia lives in hope for better days\/time.\u201d\u00a0 I told him that at least since November 8, 2016, the USA is of a similar mindset, hoping it will get better.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n I can\u2019t remember if I posted this shot or not, but I like to call it my “kitchen sink” shot.\u00a0 It\u2019s got it all \u2013 a camel, a donkey, and, well\u2026 ya know.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Moons over Tunisia.\u00a0 Here\u2019s just a sampling of various moonshots I took throughout the tour.\u00a0 The clear sky shots were courtesy of my lens error prone Canon camera but there were a few shockingly half-way decent iPhone snaps too.\u00a0 I almost never have any luck in low-light\/night with the iPhone.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n At one point while seeing where Queen Amidala’s Royal Starship supposedly landed, Nader suggested I lie in the sand to make all my friends jealous.\u00a0 I hated this idea but wanted to be a good sport.\u00a0 I think I was wrong to hate it.\u00a0 I look terrible in this shot.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n I tried leaning on this moisture farming tower at Mos Espa.\u00a0 I nearly broke it in two as it was NOT built for that at all.\u00a0 It\u2019s wobbly, paper mache, and chickenwire.\u00a0 I\u2019m surprised a strong desert wind hasn\u2019t blown it away.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Amongst the bric-a-brac for sale at Mos Espa was this petrified snake thing.\u00a0 It\u2019s a horned snake.\u00a0 Have I discussed this already?\u00a0 Very dangerous \u2013 his fangs and his horns have poisonous venom.\u00a0 Nasty little thing.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Here\u2019s an outtake from the Neck of the Camel ascent.\u00a0 It\u2019s only partly staged.\u00a0 My low-grade vertigo was acting up AND I do look that goofily pudgy in real life.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Where should we eat?\u00a0 How about that restaurant?\u00a0 Why not?<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Outside of the bigger cities, and this has been the case in a lot of my travels in Europe, Asia, and Africa, they really only carry regular Coca-Cola.\u00a0 Diet\/Light Coke and Coke Zero are almost non-existent.\u00a0 So it was that I found a Carrefour in Tozeur and they didn\u2019t let me down for scoring a fix.\u00a0 The next morning as I was carrying out a half-drunk bottle for the car ride, Nader told me I shouldn\u2019t be drinking that, especiailly in the morning.\u00a0 It\u2019s bad for the digestion and the body, he said, as he puffed away on one of his cigarettes.\u00a0 Unlike in Carthage, he didn\u2019t laugh or see the irony of his comments amidst the carcinogenic haze that enveloped him like an alternate universe Peanuts character.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Eventually I did find out what this sign meant.<\/p>\n I was really, really, RIDICULOUSLY disappointed that it wasn\u2019t:<\/p>\n It was actually a \u201cno flammable tanker trucks allowed in this area\u201d sign.\u00a0 Lame.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Salaam, Kitty!<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n In Tozeur I had a series of darkly comic and comically dark language snafus and dining mis-steps.\u00a0 One morning when breakfast seemed impossible I was able to dig up \u201cjus d\u2019orange\u201d from my French I memory banks (shout outs to you, Mademoiselle Zarfos!).\u00a0 Amidst the various sounds best compared to choking, the hotel guy was confused about \u201cjuice\/jus?\u201d\u00a0 He didn\u2019t know what that was.\u00a0 I swear \u201cjus\u201d is juice is juice and d\u2019orange<\/em> I\u2019m 100% sure is French acceptable.\u00a0 After pantomiming drinking and saying \u201cboisson?\u201d he acknowledged it and poured me this.\u00a0 I don\u2019t care what language we were speaking \u2013 that is NOT juice the color of orange.\u00a0 It was a fruit juice so I took that as a win but I wanted to keep saying \u201corange, orange, orange!\u201d\u00a0 But in my head I got stuck wondering if there\u2019s a French word that rhymes with \u201corange.\u201d<\/p>\n That same day, I got into trouble with the women working this roadside stand for snapping a photo.\u00a0 I guess I should\u2019ve asked first but I purposefully didn\u2019t take it of their faces, more of the scene itself.\u00a0 This is a road trip drive-through.\u00a0 Dotting the roads are brave souls hawking their homemade bread and condiments .\u00a0 Mohammed and Nader hadn\u2019t had breakfast that morning because as I think I said the Tozeur hotel didn\u2019t really have a breakfast\u2026 or at least not one that I was able to access.\u00a0 But this was way better than a McDonald\u2019s\u2026<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n This was probably the moment the straw broke the camel\u2019s back, when the red line was crossed, when I had stood for as much as I could and couldn\u2019t stand no more.\u00a0 This is Nader showing me the binder of the Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/em> locations in the Kairouan Medina\u2026 an hour after we visited\u2026 and effectively displaying it with less panache and showmanship than an apprentice magician playing his first big amphitheater and showing everybody a card that is illegible to anyone more than a few feet away.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n The Hotel El Fell was on the Mediterranean Sea and these are shots I took while out for a couple of runs to try and clear my mind of the toxic moments of the tour and the literal toxins from my body due to an ongoing illness and second-hand smoke.\u00a0 I also snapped a shot of Omar Khayam Club as there\u2019s a great Rocky and Bullwinkle adventure that involves the ruby yacht of Omar Khayam.<\/p>\n What\u2019s a terrible buffet breakfast look like at least half an hour after opening?\u00a0 This:<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Sidi Bou Said has a famous caf\u00e9, the caf\u00e9 of mats that is very Ottoman in its ambiance.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have anything there but I snapped a few shots as it\u2019s apparently a touristy tradition.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n In the Tunis Centre where I stayed my last night in Tunisia\u2026 perhaps ever\u2026 hopefully ever honestly\u2026 I came across this sadly closed storefront.\u00a0 Gods, the stories this place could tell.\u00a0 I really, really wish it had been open.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n I\u2019m SURE I\u2019ve posted this Pharmacie logo before, and probably even talked about it.\u00a0 But that image just screams martini glass to me.\u00a0 I guess one could argue that they sell drug cocktails so, ya know, maybe\u2026 I feel like the US medical logo is a staff surrounded by one or two snakes and a pharmacy is usually a pestle and mortar type thing.\u00a0 But maybe I\u2019m way off the map in the land where there may be dragons.\u00a0 Regardless, imagine the logo as being outside a bar.\u00a0 You totally see it, right?\u00a0 You can\u2019t unsee it now, right?<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n I just wanted something \u201clight for dinner last night.\u00a0 This is what happens when I try and go \u201csmall\u201d:<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n I wrote most of the above on my long haul connecting flight through Istanbul.\u00a0 Amongst their amenities are a clock showing when the next Islamic prayer time is and the direction of Mecca relative to the plane.\u00a0 That\u2019s something I hadn\u2019t seen before on the scrolling flight data display.<\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n Having arrived back in the US, I endured the long, slow, torturous process of watching all the other bags get unloaded\u2026 except for mine.\u00a0 After forty-five minutes the conveyer belt stopped and I was left to go to baggage services.\u00a0 Within seconds they could punch in my claim ticket record locator and see all my stuff was still in Istanbul.\u00a0 They hope to have it on the next day\u2019s flight and I may get it before my next trip out of town next week.\u00a0 Swell.<\/p>\n Of course my bag didn\u2019t make it.\u00a0 And of course it took forever to figure that out.\u00a0 And for every minute I waited at the carousel, and every minute I waited at the international baggage services window, a single clerk tasked with addressing ALL international flight bag problems, I knew I\u2019d be waiting three minutes extra in rush hour traffic home.<\/p>\n Of course they lost my bag.\u00a0 That\u2019s this trip in a nutshell.<\/p>\n The clich\u00e9 about needing a vacation from one\u2019s vacation?\u00a0 Also
