There\u2019s a throwaway line in Die Hard 2: Die Harder<\/em> (1990). \u00a0Bruce Willis, once again scrambling through a somewhat confined space, pursued and pursuing terrorists, mutters to himself, \u201cHow can the same thing happen to the same guy twice?!\u201d \u00a0I always wished he kept that up in the ensuing sequels – \u201cHow can the same thing happen to the same guy thrice?!\u201d… \u201cHow can the same thing happen to the same guy four times?!\u201d \u00a0\u201cHow can this happen a fifth time?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben Stiller did a parody on his Emmy Award winning show that had John McClane trapped in a supermarket and he may have done a variation on the above – it\u2019s been a long time since my Stiller days, both as fan and unpaid summer intern at his production company.<\/p>\n

But I found myself thinking of all that as I headed back into the air to get on the road and to run a marathon (or two or three or in this trip four races in 8 days).<\/p><\/div>\n

How can the same thing happen to the same guy at the end of this trip 398 times? \u00a0Yes, I\u2019m trying to make Pike\u2019s Peak my 400th marathon so I\u2019m on a mad scramble to get races in before August 19th. \u00a0Even with this crazed itinerary, I will still need to find one more race to make it happen.<\/div>\n

It is of course all so arbitrary. \u00a0What difference does it really make? \u00a0Is 400 really anything more special than 399 or 401? \u00a0It\u2019s just a number. \u00a0It\u2019s just a thing. \u00a0I tend to imbue greater significance on moments, memories, goals, whatzits along base 5 timelines and I\u2019m not alone. \u00a0But the truth is everything matters … and nothing does. \u00a0Will anyone care if it\u2019s 399 or 407? \u00a0No. \u00a0What others might care about … and what I *should* care about … is not the quantity but the quality of it all. \u00a0Of the race, of the time, of the life.<\/div>\n

Instead I just seem to be going through the motions. \u00a0And while there is something to be said for faking it until you make it, I don\u2019t know anymore. \u00a0I\u2019m feeling more and more like a fake that won\u2019t ever make it.<\/div>\n

Not exactly the \u201cyippie kai yay!\u201d crowdpleaser to get you or me inspired for 26.2 miles.<\/div>\n
