Sometimes you run for love.\u00a0 Sometimes you run for the numbers.<\/p>\n

I needed another race by the end of the year for statistical purposes and since I’m out in California at the moment, I could easily pop down to Long Beach and run one of Charlie Alewine’s nearly-every-weekend events<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I’ve done them before and while it’s nice to run along the beach, it’s also a little boring to do the same four loops. But logistics demand and I obey.<\/p>\n

You’ve seen photos from this course before, such as here in 2017<\/a> and here in 2018<\/a>. So I didn’t take a lot of pictures today. But the ones I did take I tried to make count.<\/p>\n

I wouldn’t have run it as fast as I did if I weren’t keeping pace with Max, a surgical resident student out of Las Vegas who was visiting his brother in North Hollywood. He actually had been training for an Ironman this weekend in Florida but didn’t realize they wanted him to check in 2 days ahead of the event. He couldn’t swing that with work but found the CAR website and decided he might as well get in the marathon at least. We were neck and neck for most of it (though he pulled ahead of me in the final loop… only to slow a bit and I caught up with him at the final turnaround). I would’ve pulled back long before had he not encouraged me to keep going. My plantar fasciitis has reared its ugly throbbing pain once again in my foot and despite generic orthotics courtesy of a podiatrist in Beverly Hills, it still smarted… perhaps because I foolishly decided to run on it. But the heart what the heart wants… and the foot just has to suck it up.<\/p>\n

Anyhoo, Max and I finished side-by-side at the finish line at just under 3:30. Charlie and Co asked which of us was first and both of us deferred to the other; I won the argument though and Charlie handed Max the 1st place medal by telling him it was the second place one. It helps to know the race director.<\/p>\n
