Turn off.\u00a0 Tune Out.\u00a0 Reset.<\/p>\r\n

This has been a tough year.\u00a0 Physically, mentally, emotionally, politically, socially.\u00a0 We all need to take a step back and take a deep breath.\u00a0 For far too long we\u2019ve been yelling at each other and nobody seems to be listening to anybody else anymore.\u00a0 We\u2019re in a feedback loop wherein our bubbles of truth reinforce our viewpoints without providing a means for dialogue to expand our knowledge, challenge our collective selves, and become better neighbors, citizens, custodians of this planet.<\/p>\r\n

I\u2019m guilty of ghosting friends who don\u2019t agree with me.\u00a0 Even as I type that I think, \u201cyeah, but that\u2019s because they have chosen to ignore science and facts and reality.\u201d\u00a0 And yet if that\u2019s the case how can I ever hope to talk to them and move forward?\u00a0 We are in fact all in this together.\u00a0 We can ignore each other but we cannot fight with each other.\u00a0 The moment violence enters into the dialogue, it\u2019s no longer a debate.\u00a0 It\u2019s then just anarchy and a fight for who will emerge ruler of the mountain.\u00a0 This is not a way forward.\u00a0 It\u2019s a way toward suffering and inequity, of petty bullying and massive dystopia.<\/p>\r\n

This is a hard thing to do amidst a global pandemic wherein the smartest thing we can do is to buckle down and really push for social distancing, wearing masks, and maintaining physical distances.\u00a0 The vaccines and the recovery from the pandemic requirements to save lives will take time.\u00a0 This is not going to be over and done with any time soon.\u00a0 It requires us all working together while apart to save the day.<\/p>\r\n

At the same time, we need to work toward getting together again.\u00a0 We need to work toward talking, not shouting.\u00a0 Toward engaging, not just superficially \u201cliking.\u201d\u00a0 We need a reset.<\/p>\r\n

So I\u2019m determined to turn off notifications on my phone.\u00a0 To put my phone down more often.\u00a0 To disengage from social media and attempt to re-connect with my social group, with my living, breathing friends and family.\u00a0 Technology is still a huge part of that \u2013 I\u2019m hoping to do a virtual game night with some folks this weekend.\u00a0 But we need to stop living our lives through valuations determined by other people, by strangers who follow us or comment on our posts (or not comment as the case may be).<\/p>\r\n

Come join me in the real world.\u00a0 And yes I acknowledge the hypocritical irony of posting this in cyberspace on a webpage.\u00a0 But we have to start somewhere to take steps into the larger world around us.\u00a0 Might as well be here.<\/p>\r\n

Think globally, live and act locally.<\/p>\r\n
