The pain!” is outrageous.

Perhaps there IS an archive somewhere of GIFs and Yarns and Reels and whatnots that has him atop the meme mountain. Marie and her Good Gravy know that I am not well-versed on the current patois and youthful slang that makes its way round the digital realms.

All this is to say that I often flash onto Dr. Smith when confronted with sports injury… or any injury really. But this being a run Kevin run blog post, I’ll focus in on the still painful stress fracture in my right tibia. Yes, despite not running for 3 weeks now (THREE WEEKS! Madness!), I’m still feeling the pain now and again on that shin/tibia.

It has forced me to re-evaluate my gym-going. So today I had what they call a “Kick-Off” Training session with a personal trainer. Sixty minutes of a curated training regimen for $10. Which is like all great sales jobs, a discounted taste so you pay more and more for the experience/item/whatzit.

I’m not going to lie — it was helpful to have somebody there calling out reps or telling me what exercise would benefit me next or pointing out form or technique mistakes. But once the session wrapped and the sales pitch started up, I flashed onto every time share hard sell I’ve ever been to in the bid for a free dinner or macadamia nuts or whatever they were offering for “just an hour of your time.” From my stated goal of trying to get to the gym three times a week, the personal training sessions with a mandatory three month commitment would’ve run into not-the-lower-end four digits. I lowballed to one session a week and even that proves to be a not-insignificant figure. They used the patented CutCo Knives technique of nodding their head as they asked the question, “Doesn’t that sound like a good deal?” to psychologically suggest and force a mirroring on my part so that I too would be nodding my head along with them. They used the “it’s actually CHEAPER to buy more even though you’re paying more because as you can see… you’re saving $2 a session this way!” The internet called a similar formula “girlMath,” a term I always kinda recoiled at and felt was derisive and unempowering. But what do I know?

Because of “the pain, the pain” of that stress fracture… and because of having to cease and desist running for what may be another 6-12 weeks… and because to get back into marathoning shape will probably require a couple of months… I’m stuck trying to find some other routine to wage the battle of the bulge and the clash of cardio. The alternative is to completely give up and that doesn’t seem like a good idea, does it?

Note I was shaking my head in the negative as I typed that… forcing myself to psychologically concur with the “no,” which feels overly complicated and wrong… yet in the haze and fog of sales and marketing, overly complicated and wrong is bread and butter to closing.

Lost in Space… Lost in Not-Running… Lost in the Gym.

First, not enough credit is given to Jonathan Harris on “Lost in Space.” Because no matter how beloved Dr. Smith might be as a ne’er do well antagonist/reluctant crewmember of the Jupiter 2 amongst fans, the fact that there isn’t a perpetual meme of him shouting, “Oh, the pain!
