I am utterly demoralized and defeated.
Van Jones on CNN summed it up best. In a holding-back-tears commentary he said democrats are upset tonight, that there were two things aimed for at this election – a moral victory and a political victory. There’s still a maybe, sorta, if you can still believe in hoped for political victory with Joe Biden emerging the winner in a few more battleground states and taking the 270 “majority.” But the moral victory has been lost.
I would argue it’s not just Democrats that are hurting, but a large swath of the world. We all had hoped for a repudiation of the vile tactics, racism, divisive rhetoric and violent acts, the very corruption of what we hold dear. And yet 50% of the country said, “we’re for that!” It is… a heavy blow. How could anyone vote for that authoritarianism, for that hate? Who are those people? How could we be so fundamentally irreconcilable and incompatible?
I live in a country where fear trumps hope, hate trumps love, and falsehoods trump fact.
I live in a country where we reward those that are bullies, that game the system, that lie and cheat and misdirect and silence voices and deny science. I live in a country that chooses to ignore what is happening right now. We are in a crisis, medical, environmental, financial, and moral. And as the world burns down, we the people have signed off on it all.
McConnell is re-elected. Graham is re-elected. The senate is lost and the House took a hit. I fear that the fix is in – that this is going to the supreme court and Trump gets his way via his appointees and backroom “do me a favors.” We already know what four years of Trump means… and this is going to be exponentially worse as he will, gods help me, rightly so, believe he was right and the “Patriots” are with him and he will punish his enemies and punish the world.
Democracy is dead, oligarchy reigns, and too many Americans made that happen… and made it happen per the Constitution of the United States.
If the last four years hasn’t convinced the majority of Americans that Donald Trump is a clear and present danger to our nation, I guess our nation is no longer the United States of America.
I am physically sick to my stomach and moralistically sick in my heart and mind.
I’m not sure how the people of Earth survive the next four years. I’m not sure there will even be four more years given climate change, militarism, economic failure, and racial divides.
